Food Service Worker

Learn the right skills to join Canada's healthcare sector as a food service worker!

JRS College’s one‐semester Food Service Worker Certificate Program equips you with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to excel in health-care food service environments across Ontario. Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Dietitians of Canada, and the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management, this program meets current government standards and employer requirements.

You will study:

  • Quantity Food Preparation for bulk meal service and therapeutic diets

  • Nutrition Foundations and the role of diet therapy in health-care settings

  • Sanitation & Safety practices, including HACCP and provincial food-safety regulations

  • Communication & Teamwork within interprofessional health-care environments


A key component is a supervised field placement, where you’ll apply classroom learning in a real-world health-care facility. Upon graduation, you’ll hold a recognized Food Service Worker Certificate from a leading private career college in Toronto, Ontario, qualifying you for roles in long-term care homes, hospitals, retirement residences, daycare centres, and more.

This program is based on documentation developed by Dietitians of Canada and the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management. During your studies, you will:

  • Communicate the role of nutrition and apply human‐nutrition principles to food production in health-care food service.

  • Discuss diet‐therapy standards for various illnesses and assemble therapeutic meals accordingly.

  • Ensure a safe dietary environment by adhering to government food-safety regulations and hazard-prevention strategies.

  • Enhance the health-care dietary area’s success and reputation through strong interpersonal and customer-service skills.

  • Operate within the Food Service Worker scope of practice to support health-care food-service goals.

  • Develop and maintain personal and professional growth strategies.

  • Apply cost-control techniques in large-scale food preparation.

  • Utilize food and baking theory in health-care meal production.

  • Implement cooking principles and large-quantity food-preparation techniques.

  • Adhere to departmental and industry work standards for health-care food-service systems.

  • Complete a hands-on field placement to practice and refine your new skills.
